In today’s society most families are female headed households. The upbringing and development of children and a standard of living adequate for the children’s development is a common responsibility of both parents and a fundamental human right for children and asserts that the primary responsibility to provide such for the children rests with their parent. (United Nations Convention on the Right of the Child, 1992). Children have a right to a decent start in life. This right is the obligation of the father and the mother to support the child’s financial and emotionally wellbeing. With the involvement of both parents, children get the chance they need and deserve to reach their full potential. Understanding child support and the duties and procedures can be a very difficult process for both parents involved. Child support is a payment of money for a child under the age of 18 which has been ordered by the circuit court within their jurisdiction. There are various approaches to calculating the amount of child support award payments some jurisdictions consider multiple sources of information when determining support, taking into account the income of the parents, the number and ages of children living in the home, basic living expenses and school fees.
